Delhi News Highlights: The three municipal corporations of Delhi will be formally merged on May 22, the central government announced on Wednesday. According to a notification issued by the Union Home Ministry, the Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022 will come into effect from May 22. The legislation was approved by Lok Sabha on March 30 and by Rajya Sabha on April 5. President Ram Nath Kovind had given his assent on April 18.

Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal submitted his resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday. Former Home Secretary Baijal replaced Najeeb Jung to become the 21st LG of Delhi in December 2016. Anil Baijal had earlier also served as the DDA vice-chairperson. His over five-year tenure was marked by frequent run-ins with the AAP dispensation over administrative jurisdiction and governance-related issues, including one in which Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers staged a dharna at the LG office in 2018.

Delhi logged 532 fresh Covid-19 cases and zero fatality due to the disease on Wednesday, while the positivity rate was recorded at 2.13 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department. On Tuesday, the national capital had recorded 393 cases at a positivity rate stood at 3.35 per cent and two deaths. With this, Delhiā€™s Covid-19 caseload increases to 19,01,660, while the death toll is at 26,198. A total of 24,989 Covid tests were conducted in the city a day ago, the department said in its latest bulletin.
