Billie Eilish’s outfits are displays of unshakeable self-assurance, logo-filled love letters to the world’s biggest fashion houses, and an individualistic expression in an industry of clones. One glance at her red carpet looks and it’s obvious that Billie is a fashion force to be reckoned with. Seven-time Grammy winner, Guinness World Record holder, and a figure on the TIME 100 NEXT List, Billie’s career is at an all-time high, and she’s only 19 years old.
The singer’s signature style includes hype-y trainers, streetwear and anime influences, and oversized, baggy fits. Designer brands such as Gucci, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and MCM love to dress the young star, too. Some of her standout clothes over the years include yellow workwear dungarees with a matching XXL puffer jacket, a Gucci logo hoodie and, most recently, her 2021 Met Gala looks.
Previously speaking to Calvin Klein, Billie says: “I never want the world to know everything about me. I mean, that’s why I wear big baggy clothes: Nobody can have an opinion, because they haven’t seen what’s underneath, you know?… Nobody can be like, ‘She’s slim-thick’, ‘She’s not slim-thick’, ‘She’s got a flat ass’, ‘She got a fat ass,'” she continued. “Nobody can say any of that, because they don’t know.”
On the flip side, the singer has clarified that she’s not being critical of people who choose to dress differently from her – she’s simply wearing what makes her happy and hopes other people feel free to do the same. Billie says, “I don’t like that there’s this weird new world of supporting me by shaming people that [may not] want to [dress like me].
Earlier this year, Billie went on to debut a whole new aesthetic on the cover of British Vogue, commencing the next chapter in her style journey. “Suddenly you’re a hypocrite if you want to show your skin, and you’re easy and you’re a sl*t and you’re a whore,” she explains. “If I am, then I’m proud. Me and all the girls are hoes, and f*ck it, y’know? Let’s turn it around and be empowered in that. Showing your body and showing your skin—or not—should not take any respect away from you.” Hear, hear.
Billie’s beauty MO contributes as much to her aesthetic as her clothes do: from clashing her rainbow hair colours with equally bright outfits to sporting her platinum blonde shaggy bob – the artist is open to experimenting with her look. She often sports dramatic nail extensions too, in black, neon, or even painted with designer logos. There’s no doubt about it – Billie has a strong sense of identity and isn’t going to let the music industry force their expectations of how female artists should look and act on her. And that’s an attitude we will always respect.
