Many of the characteristics you want your children to develop are easily taught from a young age. Teaching kids generosity starts with basic concepts such as sharing and taking turns. The majority of kids start practicing concepts related to generosity before they turn one year old. Parents play an essential role in teaching kids generosity or kindness.

It depends upon parents how they want to raise their kids and foster kindness at a very young age. There is not much to do in teaching kids generosity instead of adhering to some tips that experts suggest.

It is important to remember to model the characteristics in yourself you want your kids to exhibit. This means that if you are generous and show kindness to your children, they will be more inclined to be generous.

These are some ways to help teach kids generosity.

Practice Sharing and Taking Turns

You can start teaching your children the concepts of sharing and taking turns when playing with them at home. When they’re babies, play with a toy for a few seconds, then hand it to your child, and say, “it is your turn”.

For example, you might say, “Okay, I had a turn; it’s your turn now.” Then after your child plays for a few moments, say something like, “Now it is my turn again. You’ll get another turn soon. Sharing is so much fun!” When your children are learning the concept, keep your turns short and gradually increase them as they become more adept at it.

Encourage Giving

As your kids get older, talk with them more about how some children don’t have many things, like toys, books, or even clothing. You can also help in teaching kids generosity through this concept by reading various age-appropriate books.

When your children start learning about money, encourage them to place a part of any money they receive toward saving, some to spend, and some to charity. The good idea is to have a jar to put this money into. Then when it is filled, your children can choose a charity they would like to donate it to.

Be Kind For Teaching Kids Generosity

Finally, the old saying is true, “practice what you preach.” If you want to teach kids generosity, you must be generous first.

Don’t ignore a needy person when your kids are with you; instead, give the needy person some food and clothes. Your children will notice all of these small acts of kindness. All of them add up to make a difference.

Donate

It’s a great way to teach your child how to help others in need. Your child will also feel connected and satisfied by helping others who are in need.

Assist your kids to donate clothes to local charities or clothing banks which don’t fit him or her. Drop boxes can now be found in convenient locations such as supermarket parking lots or along the roads.

Inspire your kids to donate old blankets to your local shelter for pets. Donate any unopened pet supplies such as cat litter, pet food, training pads, and other essential pet items.

Talk To Your Children About The Importance And Benefits Of Giving

You may not ever want your kids to become self-centered brats. You have the power to prevent such a horrible outcome.

By using holy books such as Bible lessons, teach your children the importance of giving. Messages from holy books must be taught to your children every chance you get.

Even as adults, we often forget the lessons we were taught. Telling your children over and over is the key to instilling the message of generosity into their minds. Teach them suitable lessons again and again. This is the greatest way for teaching kids generosity.

Participate In Activities That Show Generosity And Compassion For Your Family

Your family can have fun and grow while participating in activities that promote generosity. Maybe the whole family will participate in a local 10K run for charity. You could also work together to collect food and clothing donations for families in need.

It’s all about instilling generosity into your family. You can do this best through your family’s actions. Children learn from you, and soon they will emulate your generosity toward others.

Fostering compassion and generosity in kids is essential at an early age. Read our other blog on How To Regulate Self-Compassion In Kids.

Encourage Your Children’s Kindness Towards Others

Children can be mean, but your kids should not be. It is essential to discuss with kids why kindness is essential. You can also set an example for kindness by being kind and encouraging kids’ interactions more with kind people around you.

It’s easier to be kind when they are doing well, but it can be challenging to be kind when they don’t see kind people around. To teach your children how to treat other people and be kind, you can use good serials, movies, and games.

Praise Good Deeds For Teaching Kids Generosity

Children are naturally inclined to do good deeds for others. You can praise your child if they do a nice thing, such as sharing a toy, complimenting someone, or carrying groceries. A child is more likely to do the same thing if he or she is given positive recognition.
